 German doctor Ruth Fau, who dedicated her life to leprosy patients in Pakistan, has been laid to rest with state honors in Karachi.

 Earlier, the last rites of Dr. Ruth Fau were performed with full state honors on the instructions of the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

 'Mother Teresa of Pakistan' Dr. Ruth Fau passed away in Karachi on the night of August 10 last week.

 The last rites were attended by President Mamnoon Hussain, Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa and Governor Sindh besides other important personalities.  Dr. Ruth was also given a 21-gun salute.

 "Don't associate Dr. Ruth with Mother Teresa."

 Armed forces personnel took Dr. Ruth's khaki body to St. Patrick's Church in the Saddar area of ​​Karachi, while his coffin was wrapped in a Pakistani flag.

 It is to be noted that the personnel of the three Armed Forces have taken up the responsibility of ensuring the security situation during the last rites.

 With the help of the government, they set up leprosy centers in Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.  In recognition of his services, in 1979 he was appointed by the Federal Department of Health as an Assistant on Leprosy.

 Dr. Rath finally overcame leprosy in 1996, after which Pakistan was declared the first country in Asia to control leprosy.

 He has written four books in German on his work in Pakistan, of which 'To Light a Candle' has been translated into English.  He was awarded Sitara-e-Quaid-e-Azam, Sitara-e-Hilal Award in Pakistan.
